The Difference Between Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware Workplace Connect

Anti-virus and anti-malware are very similar in terms of how they operate and their main aim; for example, to protect your devices from a cyber-attack and to detect threats. However, there are many differences between the two and it is important to be aware of what these are. Especially if you are considering how to improve your cyber security strategy.

This blog will explain the main differences between anti-virus and anti-malware; so you can make an informed choice on what you need.

  1. Protection

Despite the names giving a clue as to what the differences could be between these two products; it is not very easy to understand. Anti-virus offers protection for devices against viruses, therefore it will detect and remove viruses from your computer. However, it does not look for or defend any other kind of threat your computer could be vulnerable to. On the other hand, anti-malware is designed to look out for all kinds of malware threats; this includes:

  • Spyware
  • Adware
  • Worms
  • Viruses
  • Trojan horses

Therefore, it can be considered wise to invest in anti-malware products. Due to the extensive range of threats your devices will be protected against; this is especially important if you are using the device for work reasons.

  1. Relevancy

It is important you invest in security products and services; that have the ability to keep up with the newest and most sophisticated kinds of cyber-attacks. Unfortunately, although anti-virus is great for removing traditional styles of viruses, it cannot defend well against new and ever-changing viruses, which could be a problem if you are heavily relying on it for your security strategy.

Anti-malware is different to this because it will provide defence from all kinds of malware including newer and more sophisticated versions. Therefore, it would be considered better to use anti-malware on your devices. However, just installing anti-malware should never be your whole plan for a security strategy, it should play an element in it.

  1. Updates

Similar to what was stated in the previous section, anti-virus does not have its rules updated that frequently which means it could be unable to keep up with the evolution of various kinds of viruses. Therefore, you should not solely rely on that product to give your business’s devices the protection it requires.

Anti-malware rules get updated frequently which means that it is likely to have a better chance of detecting malware than anti-virus can offer. This is especially important if you have a lot of sensitive information stored on your device. But it is worth noting you need to incorporate this product into an entire strategy rather than just relying on it alone.

  1. Usage

Many of us are familiar with the term anti-virus because it is a product that we use on our personal computers. The preferred option for personal use devices is anti-virus due to it being the most commonly heard type of defence as well as being the cheapest. Anti-virus has the ability to work on most systems which is another benefit.

On the other hand, anti-malware is mostly used for organisational devices because there is a greater need for security precautions and there is also a increased risk of becoming a victim of a cyber-attack. Despite anti-malware costing more, it provides a greater line of defence and business must ensure they are protected from every angle due to the serious implications if a breach was to happen.

  1. Compatibility

Depending on the device you have, you could only be able to use anti-virus on your computer. However, if you have a more advanced system, you could use anti-malware. Anti-virus is used the most due to it having better system compatibility, which means it will work well on the device and be able to be stored easily.

However, anti-malware is usually used less because it has high rate and system compatibility; this is why it is mostly used for organisational devices.
